If you were eligible to receive covid-19 related stimulus payments, and never received them, you may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 personal tax return.
The covid-19 stimulus payments, called Economic Impact Payments, were actually advances on a refundable tax credit. Taxpayers who received the stimulus are not eligible for this credit, because they received the advances. However, if you met the criteria to be eligible for Economic Impact Payments, and never received them, you may be able to increase your refund or reduce your tax liability using the Recovery Rebate Credit, which is Box 30 on page two of the 2020 form 1040.
Note: the vast majority of taxpayers who did not receive covid-19 stimulus payments were phased out from participation, because their adjusted gross income levels are too high. The Recovery Rebate Credit similarly phases out based on adjusted gross income. If you are unsure as to whether you may be eligible for this Recovery Rebate Credit, we recommend contacting a qualified tax professional.
